A month ago, when I was procrastinating over the shoo fly, I pulled some blue/cream nickels for a quilt for my mum. Today I was able to baste it ready to start quilting tomorrow.
I looked up the name of the block in Barbara Brackman's "Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns" and she lists 4 names: A Plain Block; Nine Patch: Sheepfold Quilt; Irish Chain. However, I'm going to call it the name given to the method of assembling it from nickels (5" squares) derived by Dorothy Young - Nickel Nine Patch.
The quilt top finished at approx 43" wide, so just too wide to back with one width of fabric. However, I split the backing lengthwise and added a strip of pieced nickels to bring it up to a perfect width. This way I can do it all from stash and the finished quilt will be interesting on the back too and therefore reversible :)

Making that block is easy and fun--and they look so nice. Hmm--I know on my sewing table there's a whole set of those blocks......
