I was excited to see the release of the instructions for the first part of the mystery yesterday. I scanned them, seeing we were making quarter square triangles (QSTs), then I read closer and saw that they would be 2.5" square to finish at 2" in the quilt - GULP!!!! That's pretty small!! I've made a few test pilots this morning trying out a couple of different ways of making them. On the left I used 3.5" squares and used the "draw-sew-cut-press-draw-sew-cut-press" method referred to by Bonnie, but I also had to trim. They are many steps involed, but no bias edges and they are accurate.
On the right I used 1.5" strips and Companion Angle ruler, as described in Bonnie's instructions. They've come out pretty accurate, but I needed to seperately trim the dog ears.
At this point I've not decided which method to use for the rest. I'll have to cut the fabric strips/squares which ever one I decide on as I don't have any black fabrics in my strip bins ... it's obviously not a colour I've used much in the past.
Pondering ... :)
Looking great! I haven't started yet as I am waiting for the special rulers to come in the post.......anyway I remind myself that Bonnie says it is not a race!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, what an ambitious project you've let yourself in for! Your QST's look great! Good luck finding some black and white. I keep looking and looking as I'd like to build my stash in that area, but just can't find any I really like.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness - I've jumped in as well! We're all crazy, me thinks! I've make about 30 of the QSTs. fortunately I have a lot of 1.5 inch strips (lights) already cut, but they sure would go faster in a Log Cabin or String Quilt. I think she said the worst part is first! Ya think?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I just got caught up in the excitement and raised my hand!!! 8-)) It's always fun to see what everyone comes up with.
The first time I used the rulers Bonnie recommended, I didn't like my accuracy and reverted to making the components the way I had always made them. But after the initial rejection, I did use the rulers here and there, now and then, more and more, and now I can't imagine not using them. This time I have fabric big enough to be able to choose whether I want to work with squares or strips, so I think I'll follow your example and try making them both ways before cutting everything.
ReplyDeleteHi Helen. Your blocks are looking really good. I'm using the 31/4" square method as I don't have an angle ruler. It nice to find someone in the UK who is doing Bonnie's quilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your nice comment on my blog.
