I'm plugging away at my Orca Bay, but only making very slow progress. Currently I'm cutting the large string squares into the triangles and applying the orca tail wings (part 7). I'm doing them only a couple at a time because I'm very nervous about the bias edges, so am starching, pressing, sewing, etc. So far they are coming out beautifully - phew!! Here's one star block laid out so I can see the effect.I always planned to make a smaller version of the quilt and had thought about putting green (Bonnie's blue) centres into the lighter Ohio stars. However, after seeing how Julia is sutlely altering her layout, I might follow suit.
I really am rather liking this second layout. Luckily I only have one Ohio Star sewn so far, so not much ripping would be required to change tack at this stage :) Any preferences?

I like the second layout with your color scheme.
ReplyDeleteThey are both lovely but I agree in the second one the pattern is more noticable. Yours is looking good - I wish I had got going on this but was really busy when it started xx
ReplyDeleteMine will be the alternate layout. It looks best for my colors. Thanks for showing the computerized layouts it really helps see the difference.
ReplyDeleteFor me the original layout works better to get the "on point" feeling, though with your fairly light reds that might not be such an issue in the actual quilt as it is in the mockup.
ReplyDeleteHi Helen, I am no where near finishing my Orca Bay. But the different layouts makes me think that it was good to delay. I think I prefer the more defined diagonals. It blends the star blocks more easily into the quilt. In the first layout, the white blocks seem to be sitting on top of the diagonals and pop out at you. There is more balance in the second layout.
ReplyDeleteI like the color changes you suggested. I'm lagging behind with mine, but will try some of these ideas when I get that far along.

ReplyDeleteI like them both so I would have a hard time deciding if it was mine. Your colours are wonderful! I am still sewing the rows together and hope to be finished in the next few days.
ReplyDeleteYour asking me? Can't say as they are both lovely. You are doing a great job, maybe I should get mine out of 'the headache box'.
ReplyDeleteLoving that second layout!
ReplyDeleteI like them both. Bonnie does such a great job designing her quilts.
ReplyDeleteHow did you make the EQ layout with the string blocks? Are you able to send it to me to load into my EQ program? That would save so much time!
Looking great! I really like that second layout too...might have to lay out some of what I ahve and see if I like that better,..only have one block each done so time to change it up.
ReplyDeleteI like the first one best where you changed to green centers...the 2nd while it emphasizes the diagonal more is too dark for my liking. Good luck deciding!
ReplyDeleteWauw, I definately would go for the second one, it looks really strong.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with it.
Love your block! Both layouts are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors. Looking foward to seeing it ompleted. I'm just starting mine.
ReplyDeleteLove seeing the alternate layouts. I was just so happy to have finished making the elements that I went ahead and sewed everyting by the book, so to speak. Still have the border to deal with.
ReplyDeleteThey are both amazing, but I think I like the last one the best.
ReplyDeleteI like 'em both! your string blocks are SO cheerful! Great job, Sharyn in Kalama
ReplyDeleteLove your colors and both layouts look great!
ReplyDeleteI just started clue #1 and using different colors than Bonnie. Blue, yellow, brown and white/black as background.
If you could share your EQ layout file it would help me to "see" if my color choices will work.
Looking forward to see your finished quilt.
